In a powerful keynote address at the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung’s Inter Party Youth Forum held at Ufungamano House, veteran politician and Wiper Patriotic Front party leader HE Dr. Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka urged young Kenyans to champion unity, dialogue, and principled politics as the foundation for Kenya’s democratic future.
Addressing a vibrant gathering of young leaders from across the political spectrum, Kalonzo emphasized the vital role inter-party cooperation plays in safeguarding Kenya’s democracy and fostering inclusive governance. He highlighted the long journey Kenya has traveled from a one-party state to a multiparty system marked by spirited debate and coalition politics.
“Democracy flourishes not in the shouting of one voice, but in the chorus of many voices coming together in dialogue, compromise, and cooperation,” he said. Drawing from his decades in public service, Kalonzo reflected on the significance of alliances such as NARC, CORD, NASA, and Azimio, describing them as proof that unity across divides is stronger than divisive politics.
The seasoned leader addressed the youth directly with a clarion call to abandon politics based on personality cults and ethnic divisions, and instead embrace issue-based politics grounded in integrity and service. “You are not just the leaders of tomorrow; you are leaders of today,” he reminded them.
Kalonzo was emphatic on the importance of rejecting corruption, resisting political manipulation, and demanding accountability not only from their leaders but also within themselves. “The future you dream of will not be handed to you; it will be built by you,” he stated.Stressing that inter-party cooperation is not a convenience but a necessity, Kalonzo underscored its role in protecting the rule of law, democratic institutions, and inclusive participation in governance. He warned that democracy without justice, jobs, and opportunities remains an empty promise.
To institutionalize this cooperation among young leaders, Kalonzo called for the establishment of a structured Inter-Party Youth Council. This platform would serve as a forum for dialogue, trust-building, and leadership development across party lines, securing a foundation for unity, peace, and shared prosperity in Kenya’s future.Highlighting the need to move away from “politics of strongmen,” Kalonzo reiterated the importance of building strong institutions, upholding strong values, and nurturing strong young leaders. “If you can walk this path, then the promise of our democracy will outlive us all,” he concluded.
The keynote was warmly received by attendees, signaling a hopeful step towards bridging political divides through youth engagement and cooperation. The Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, known for its longstanding support of democratic values globally, facilitated the event to inspire young leaders in strengthening Kenya’s multiparty democracy.Dr. Kalonzo Musyoka’s address comes at a crucial moment when Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve, and the role of youth in shaping governance and accountability remains more critical than ever.
