The announcement by President William Ruto that Kenya has joined Tanzania and Uganda in a bid to host the 2027 AFCON is certainly a balm to football lovers. It is my hope that this time around Kenya will be well prepared, as it has missed being a host before. In 1993, Kenya was chosen to host the 1996 AFCON; however, due to various challenges and issues, including delays in infrastructure development and concerns about security, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) decided to move the tournament to South Africa.
With the three nations bidding to host the competition, the benefits and exposure it will bring to the country cannot be overlooked. Our stadiums need to meet international standards in order to win the bid. Kasarani and Nyayo are far from ready when it comes to hosting a competition. This calls for quick action before the deadline to submit the bid expires.
