Alexander Pushkin’s story “Pikova dama” is one of the most famous works of Russian literature. This story is rich in mysterious and psychological elements, exploring the themes of happiness, passion and loss of self. The main character of the story is a young and self-confident officer Herman. He strives not only for politeness and wealth, but also for happiness. His dream is to acquire a large amount of money and happiness. His life changes completely when he hears the legend of “Pikova dama” (an ancient heiress).
“Pikova dama” is a woman who was once known for her mysterious gambling success, she had the ability to correctly guess three cards. And through these cards, Herman thinks that he will gain wealth and happiness. Therefore, he approaches the Queen of Spades and tries to find out the woman’s secret. He tries to manipulate the woman and decides to reveal her secret. Later, he kills the woman, and this incident leads to his loss of self and tragic consequences. Herman’s dreams of wealth and success distract him from making rational decisions.
The work shows attempts to manipulate fate – attempts to change fate and happiness through cards. The relationship with Pikova and attempts to reveal her secrets show betrayal and distrust. This integrity, however, indicates that Pushkin is a skillful writer.
In conclusion, Pushkin, in this story, explores the evil side of human passions and the search for happiness, showing the consequences of decisions and actions.
